Eisenhardt Mills: Carpenters’ choice for custom millwork
Quality craftsmanship, the foundation of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters (UBC). Essentially, quality craftsmanship is the ingredient that forms the bond among union members of diverse skill sets. When the UBC sought to enhance their Training Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, with custom pieces reflective of their trade and vision, they turned to the quality craftsmanship of Eisenhardt Mills, Inc.
Establishing Construction Plumb
Plumb bobs have been used in building and construction since the time of the ancient Egyptians to establish what’s plumb, or exactly vertical. Still a useful and accurate tool today, the UBC chose to incorporate this long-standing symbol of carpentry into their Las Vegas Training Center, commissioning Eisenhardt Mills to craft a large-scale plumb bob suspended above a round table fitted with curved benches.
The United Brotherhood of Carpenters commissioned Eisenhardt Mills to craft a large-scale plumb bob for their Training Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. The plumb bob is suspended above a round table with curved benches.
Balancing Form and Function
The project, completed on time in 1,350 hours, features a plumb bob measuring 4’-6” in diameter x 10’-0” tall. Directly below it, five curved benches hug the contours of a round base table. The plumb bob, tables and benches are a symphony of perfectly contrasting and color-balanced premium woods:
- Rift white oak
- Quartered sycamore
- Bird’s eye maple
The woods were chosen not only for their contrasting, yet complementary appearance, but also for their qualities of resilience and durability. Hand selected and moisture tested for their ability to withstand the arid conditions of Las Vegas, the chosen pieces were strategically matched, finished and aligned for optimal aesthetic appeal.
Ebony and brushed stainless steel accents create a seamless connection between the wooden sections and the brushed stainless steel cap, base and hanging cable, (crafted by Raredon Resources).
Core Strength and Curved Shapes
Creating a framework capable of providing the needed structural integrity at a manageable weight was one of the project’s unique challenges. To meet the demands, Eisenhardt engineered a hollow core with open steel framing and lightweight, heat-treated materials. The long, tapered cone section of the plumb bob features a core manufactured with poplar, thermal treated for durability in the dry Nevada climate, then veneered.
The commissioned work also showcased the beauty of five distinct wood sections perfectly harmonized in a round table, surrounded by a graceful arc of benches. Leveraging Eisenhardt’s CNC manufacturing capabilities, artisans shaped the curved sections of wood, then carefully glued them together. Additional, they were aligned with ebony and brushed stainless steel accents, before finish-sanding, thus finishing the process.
The finished product is a masterpiece of steel-accented, custom-crafted wood and engineering ingenuity that pays homage to the UBC’s commitment to quality craftsmanship.
